I pay for Claude Pro, and it’s still the sharpest reasoning and coding model I can subscribe to, so when I open another tab it’s for one specific gap. If that gap is the Claude Code bill, DeepSeek’s API is the cheapest way out; every other gap below has its own pick.
What each alternative beats Claude at
| Tool | Beats Claude at | Entry paid | Free tier does real work | Trains on your chats by default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude (for reference) | Writing, long context | $17-20/mo | Yes | Yes on individual (Team/Ent no) |
| ChatGPT | Image gen, plugin ecosystem | $20/mo | Yes, limited | Yes (opt-out available) |
| Gemini | Price, free-tier breadth | $4.99/mo | Yes, generously | Yes (Keep Activity toggle) |
| Perplexity | Cited research | $17/mo | Barely | No on Enterprise |
| DeepSeek | Cost per token | Free consumer / API | Yes, unlimited chat | Yes, data hosted in PRC |
| Mistral Vibe | EU residency, MCP coding | $14.99/mo | Yes | Yes on Free/Pro (opt-out); no on Ent |
| Ollama | Local privacy | Free (your hardware) | Yes, unlimited | Never |
I checked every price and training policy in this table against the vendor’s own pricing and privacy pages on 2026-08-25.
Usage limits and the Claude Code bill
DeepSeek: free chat and the cheapest API
DeepSeek’s consumer chat at chat.deepseek.com runs DeepSeek-V4 for free and advertises no message cap. On the API, DeepSeek-V4-Flash is $0.14 per million input tokens (checked 2026-08-25, platform.deepseek.com/pricing), and the open weights can be self-hosted.
The trade doesn’t bend: per DeepSeek’s own privacy policy, data is processed and stored in the People’s Republic of China, prompts train the model by default, and there’s no image generation. Switch only if that’s acceptable for what you send it. See DeepSeek alternatives.
Mistral Vibe: agentic coding for less than Claude Pro
Mistral Vibe Pro is $14.99/mo (checked 2026-08-25, mistral.ai/pricing), under Claude Pro’s $17-20/mo, and the free tier runs the current SOTA models. For coding it’s a serious contender: full MCP support, a CLI, VS Code, JetBrains, and Zed plugins, and 100+ connectors. Its privacy terms are in the EU section below.
If you’d rather keep Claude Code and drop the bill, Ollama can run it against local models (last section).
No native image generation
Claude can’t make an image and has nothing like the Custom GPTs marketplace. ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo (checked 2026-08-25, openai.com/chatgpt/pricing) closes both gaps, and its free tier runs GPT-5.5 Instant with limited image generation, search, and Deep Research, so you may not need the paid plan at all.
Add it next to Claude rather than replacing it: its reasoning on writing tasks lags Claude Opus 4.8 for me. Individual Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans train on your chats unless you turn that off in Data Controls. OpenAI does state its encryption (TLS 1.2 in transit, AES-256 at rest), which is more than Anthropic publishes. Deeper picks in ChatGPT alternatives.
Web research without citations you can check
Perplexity Pro at $17/mo (annual) or $20/mo monthly (checked 2026-08-25, perplexity.ai/pro) routes searches across an in-house Sonar model plus Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini 3.1 Pro, GPT-5.6, and Kimi. So you still get Claude, inside a search-first interface with a citation on every claim.
The free tier gives three Pro Searches a day, one Research query a month, and no advanced models. For research I’d switch fully; for writing or coding it’s no replacement. Full Perplexity review.
The price, and a free tier that does more
Google AI Plus starts at $4.99/mo and AI Pro is $19.99/mo (checked 2026-08-25, gemini.google/subscriptions). The free tier includes Gemini 3.5 Flash, varying access to the 3.1 Pro flagship, image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, and 15GB of Google One storage. Claude’s free plan has no image generation and gates Research to Pro and up.
What it costs you is privacy defaults. Gemini can use your conversations to improve its models, and human reviewers may see samples, unless you turn off Keep Activity or use a Temporary Chat. Retention defaults to 18 months. It suits Workspace users and anyone who wants a capable free tier without a credit card. More in Gemini alternatives.
EU data residency
Paris-based Mistral rebranded Le Chat as Vibe in mid-2026, and Team is $24.99/user/mo (checked 2026-08-25, mistral.ai/pricing). Privacy splits by tier: individual Free and Pro train by default with an opt-out, while Enterprise and paid-API data are excluded from training, and Enterprise supports on-prem or private-cloud deployment with EU data residency. The weights are self-hostable too. For EU teams, that makes it a full switch rather than an add-on.
When the data can never leave the machine
Ollama runs Llama 3.3, gpt-oss, DeepSeek-V4, or Mistral open weights on your own hardware, free and unlimited, without training on your inputs or sending prompts anywhere. It can also run Claude Code and Codex against those local models, so you keep the coding loop without the API bill. An optional Cloud tier ($20/mo) covers models bigger than you can host.
You need real hardware (recent Apple Silicon or a 24GB+ VRAM GPU for useful models), there’s no image generation, and output is bounded by whichever open model you load.
