Gemini trains on your chats by default unless you turn off Keep Activity, and the deeper you are in Docs, Gmail, and Drive, the more it costs to walk away. If you only use the Gemini app, ChatGPT is the straight swap; if Google itself is the problem, Mistral Vibe (EU-hosted) or Ollama (fully local) gets you out.
What you’d leave behind is real: the most generous free tier in the field, a Workspace integration nobody else matches, and paid plans from $4.99/mo (AI Plus) to $19.99/mo (AI Pro). Against that, Google publishes no blanket at-rest encryption claim, and Gemini’s natural prose reads more “AI-generated” to me than Claude’s.
Which alternative fits how you use Google
- You live in Docs, Gmail, and Drive. Keep Gemini where it’s wired in and add Claude for writing and coding. Nothing below replaces the integration.
- You only use the Gemini app. ChatGPT for the widest general swap, Perplexity for cited research, DeepSeek for the lowest API cost.
- Google’s defaults are why you’re leaving. Mistral Vibe for EU hosting, Ollama if nothing should leave your machine.
Where each alternative beats Gemini
| Tool | Beats Gemini at | Entry paid | Free tier does real work | Trains on you by default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini (for reference) | Free tier, Workspace | $4.99/mo | Yes, generously | Yes (Keep Activity toggle) |
| ChatGPT | Plugin ecosystem, transparency | $20/mo | Yes | Yes (opt-out) |
| Claude | Writing quality, coding | $17-20/mo | Yes | Yes on individual (Team/Ent no) |
| Perplexity | Cited research | $17/mo | Barely | No on Enterprise |
| DeepSeek | Cost per token | Free / $0.14/M API | Yes, unlimited chat | Yes, data hosted in PRC |
| Mistral Vibe | EU residency, MCP coding | $14.99/mo | Yes | Yes on Free/Pro (opt-out); no on Ent |
| Ollama | Local privacy | Free (your hardware) | Yes, unlimited | Never |

If you live in Docs, Gmail, and Drive
This is where leaving costs the most. Gemini’s Workspace integration is the one thing on this page nobody else matches, so replacing Gemini outright means losing the AI inside the apps you already work in. That’s why I keep Gemini’s free tier for Workspace and add one tool for the gap it leaves. If that gap is writing quality or coding depth, the tool is Claude.
Claude, next to Gemini rather than instead of it
Claude Pro at $17/mo (annual) or $20/mo monthly (checked 2026-08-25, anthropic.com/pricing) is the pick when Gemini’s prose reads too “AI” or you want a coding agent that treats itself as a product. Claude Opus 4.8 handles long documents and coding sessions past the point where Gemini starts hedging.
What you give up: no native image generation, no Custom GPTs equivalent, and a rolling 5-hour usage window that can wall off a heavy session. Team and Enterprise opt out of training by default; individual plans train unless you opt out. See the verified Claude profile.
If you’re weighing Microsoft’s suite instead, Copilot only makes sense if you already pay for M365. It discloses neither its model nor its limits, trains “in some markets” unless you opt out, and no longer has standalone consumer pricing.
If you only use the Gemini app
Nothing is wired in here, so it’s a straight capability swap. Pick by what you want done better.
ChatGPT: the widest general-purpose swap
ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo (checked 2026-08-25, openai.com/chatgpt/pricing) runs GPT-5.6 Sol, Free runs GPT-5.5 Instant, and a Go plan sits between them at $8/mo. Free includes limited image generation, search, and Deep Research. Gemini’s free tier is more generous on Deep Research; ChatGPT’s is more generous on plugins.
Custom GPTs, Canvas, voice, and the Excel and PowerPoint extensions give you an ecosystem outside Google, and OpenAI states its encryption (TLS 1.2 in transit, AES-256 at rest). Individual plans still train on your chats unless you opt out in Data Controls. More options in ChatGPT alternatives.
Perplexity: when Gemini’s citations don’t hold up
Perplexity Pro at $17/mo annual or $20/mo monthly (checked 2026-08-25, perplexity.ai/pro) routes each search across an in-house Sonar model plus Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini 3.1 Pro, GPT-5.6, and Kimi, and ties every answer to specific sources. Gemini’s Deep Research does that inconsistently.
The free tier is far thinner than Gemini’s: three Pro Searches a day, one Research query a month, no advanced models. Full Perplexity review.
DeepSeek: the lowest cost, with China-hosted data
DeepSeek-V4 costs nothing to chat with and DeepSeek advertises no message cap. On the API, DeepSeek-V4-Flash is $0.14 per million input tokens (checked 2026-08-25, platform.deepseek.com/pricing), and the open weights can be self-hosted.
Only use it for work with nothing sensitive in it. DeepSeek’s own privacy policy says data is processed and stored in the People’s Republic of China, prompts train the model by default, and there’s no image generation, so it’s no escape from Google’s training defaults. See DeepSeek alternatives.
If Google lock-in is the reason you’re leaving
Then the question is where your data goes, not which model is smarter.
Mistral Vibe: the EU-hosted exit
Mistral rebranded Le Chat as Vibe in mid-2026. Pro is $14.99/mo and Team $24.99/user/mo (checked 2026-08-25, mistral.ai/pricing), and the free tier runs the current SOTA models. You get full MCP support, a CLI, VS Code, JetBrains, and Zed plugins, 100+ connectors, and open weights.
Read the tiers before you move. Individual Free and Pro train on your chats by default, with a real opt-out. Enterprise and paid-API data are excluded from training, and Enterprise supports on-prem or private-cloud deployment with EU data residency.
Ollama: nothing reaches Google at all
Ollama runs Llama 3.3, gpt-oss, DeepSeek-V4, or Mistral open weights on your own machine, free and unlimited, with no training on your prompts and nothing sent to Google or anyone else. The cost is hardware (recent Apple Silicon or a 24GB+ VRAM GPU for useful sizes), no image generation, and output bounded by whichever open model you load.
One to avoid on this route: Kimi, from Moonshot AI, is cheap for long-context coding but has no training opt-out at all and keeps data in China.
