Microsoft Copilot Alternatives and What You Give Up

What you lose leaving Microsoft Copilot, then the swaps: Gemini for the office suite, ChatGPT and Claude on quality, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Ollama.

Copilot won’t tell you which model you’re talking to, publishes no free-tier quotas, has no data export, and folds paid usage into an M365 subscription you can’t skip. If the Office wiring is what you’d miss, Gemini does the same job inside Workspace at a quarter of the price; if it isn’t, ChatGPT and Claude both beat Copilot on the assistant itself.

This is about the general-purpose Microsoft Copilot at copilot.microsoft.com, not GitHub Copilot.

What you lose by leaving Copilot

Copilot’s hooks are real. It’s free with a Microsoft account, it’s baked into Office and Windows, and it ships image generation through Designer. Leave it and three things change:

  • The Office and Windows wiring. Gemini is the closest rebuild of that idea, in Google’s apps rather than Microsoft’s. ChatGPT reaches into Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Sheets through extensions. With Claude you lose the direct wiring.
  • Image generation. ChatGPT (limited on Free) and Gemini keep it. Claude, DeepSeek, and Ollama have none.
  • The bundle price. Copilot comes inside M365 from $9.99. Gemini starts at $4.99/mo, ChatGPT and Claude at $20/mo, Perplexity at $17/mo, and DeepSeek chat and Ollama are free.

What you gain is visibility: every alternative below names its model. If Copilot still covers most of your work and only the opacity bothers you, keep its free tier and add one of these for the gap.

The like-for-like office-suite swap: Gemini in Workspace

Gemini is Copilot’s job done inside Workspace instead of M365: AI in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Chrome. Google AI Plus is $4.99/mo and AI Pro $19.99/mo (checked 2026-08-25, gemini.google/subscriptions). The free tier covers Gemini 3.5 Flash, varying access to the 3.1 Pro flagship, image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, and 15GB of Google One storage. Long-context handling is best in class.

The catch: Google trains on your chats unless you turn off Keep Activity or use a Temporary Chat, and retention defaults to 18 months. Unlike Copilot, it lets you export your data. More in Gemini alternatives.

Mistral Vibe ($14.99/mo) is strong on EU residency and MCP coding, but its integration ecosystem is smaller and the Le Chat rebrand is still shaking out, so it isn’t an Office replacement yet.

Standalone assistants that beat it on quality

ChatGPT: names its model, publishes its tiers

OpenAI is plain about what you get: GPT-5.6 Sol on Plus at $20/mo, GPT-5.5 Instant on Free, and a cheaper Go plan at $8/mo (checked 2026-08-25, openai.com/chatgpt/pricing). Free includes limited image generation, search, and Deep Research, and the Custom GPTs marketplace, Canvas, and voice give it real reach.

Individual Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans train on your chats unless you opt out in Data Controls. You can opt out, you can export, and encryption is stated (TLS 1.2 in transit, AES-256 at rest).

Claude: the better reasoner and writer

Claude Pro at $20/mo (checked 2026-08-25, anthropic.com/pricing) beats Copilot cleanly on reasoning, coding, and writing quality. Its rolling 5-hour usage window at least tells you where the ceiling is, which Copilot never does.

There’s no native image generation and no Custom GPTs equivalent. Individual Free and Pro accounts train by default (opt-out available); Team and Enterprise don’t. See the verified Claude profile.

Research first: Perplexity

Perplexity Pro at $17/mo annual or $20/mo monthly (checked 2026-08-25, perplexity.ai/pro) routes searches across an in-house Sonar model plus Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini 3.1 Pro, GPT-5.6, and Kimi. Every answer comes with citations attached, which Copilot’s browsing doesn’t manage reliably.

The free tier is thin: three Pro Searches a day, one Research query a month, no advanced models. Full Perplexity review.

Cheapest: DeepSeek

You can chat with DeepSeek-V4 for free at chat.deepseek.com, with no message cap advertised, and DeepSeek-V4-Flash costs $0.14 per million input tokens on the API (checked 2026-08-25, platform.deepseek.com/pricing). Open weights are self-hostable.

The low price has a cost of its own. Per DeepSeek’s privacy policy, data is processed and stored in the People’s Republic of China, prompts train the model by default, and there’s no image generation. Keep it to coding and cost-driven work with no confidential data in it. See DeepSeek alternatives.

Local, if you want to know exactly what runs: Ollama

Copilot won’t name its model; with Ollama you choose it yourself (Llama 3.3, gpt-oss, DeepSeek-V4, or Mistral open weights), free and unlimited on your own hardware, with no training on your inputs and no prompts sent anywhere. The price is real hardware (recent Apple Silicon or a 24GB+ VRAM GPU), no image generation, and output bounded by the open model you load; an optional $20/mo Cloud tier covers models bigger than your box can host.
