Perplexity’s free tier caps Research at one query a month, a hard limit on a tool whose whole point is cited research. Gemini’s free tier includes Deep Research outright, so that’s the swap for the cap; the right pick for anything else depends on what you research.
I pay for Perplexity Pro, and it’s the cleanest cited-answer product I know. The other complaints are real too: Pro users have reported creeping paywalls on the file-upload button, and Perplexity doesn’t disclose where consumer data is hosted or how long it’s kept. Since citations are the reason you’re on Perplexity, here’s how each alternative handles them.
How each alternative handles sources
| Tool | Beats Perplexity at | Entry paid | Citations pinned to source | Trains on you by default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity (for reference) | Cited multi-model research | $17/mo | Yes, tight | Standard yes; Pro opt-out |
| ChatGPT | Full assistant, ecosystem | $20/mo | Loose | Yes (opt-out) |
| Gemini | Free Deep Research, price | $4.99/mo | Improving | Yes (Keep Activity toggle) |
| Grok | Live X search | $30/mo | Loose | Yes (Private Chat opts out) |
| Andi | Free anonymous cited search | Free | Yes | No, chats not logged |
| Claude | Reasoning, coding | $17-20/mo | No web search | Yes on individual; Team/Ent no |
| Kagi Assistant | Cited AI over trusted search | $25/mo | Yes, tight | No |

Research inside a general assistant: Gemini or ChatGPT
Gemini with Deep Research
Google AI Plus starts at $4.99/mo and AI Pro is $19.99/mo (checked 2026-08-25, gemini.google/subscriptions). The free tier includes Gemini 3.5 Flash, image generation, Deep Research (which Perplexity gates to one query a month on free), Gemini Live, and 15GB of Google One storage. Grounded search on Google’s index is the closest thing to Perplexity’s core value, at a quarter of the price.
Sources: citations are less consistent than Perplexity’s. Deep Research improves them, but only when you run in Research mode. Training is on by default unless you turn off Keep Activity, with 18 months of retention by default. See Gemini alternatives.
ChatGPT, where search is one feature of many
ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo (checked 2026-08-25, openai.com/chatgpt/pricing) puts search next to Custom GPTs, Canvas, voice, image generation, and file work. GPT-5.6 Sol runs on Plus and GPT-5.5 Instant on Free, and Free includes limited image generation, search, and Deep Research. This is the pick if your Perplexity use included daily general chat, not only research.
Sources: citation quality on ChatGPT’s browsing is noticeably weaker than Perplexity’s, and it buries sources in footnotes rather than pinning each claim to one. Individual plans train on your chats unless you opt out in Data Controls (the opt-out is clean), and encryption is stated explicitly. See ChatGPT alternatives.
Real-time news and X: Grok
Grok is the only mainstream assistant reading X (Twitter) in real time (SuperGrok $30/mo, checked 2026-08-25, x.ai/pricing). For breaking news or social conversation, it reads sources Perplexity’s web index doesn’t cover.
Sources: Grok cites, but thinner than Perplexity does. It also costs more than Perplexity Pro, SuperGrok Heavy is $300/mo, xAI doesn’t publish clean quotas or the model version, and it trains on your chats by default unless you use Private Chat. See Grok alternatives.
Free, anonymous cited search: Andi
Andi at andisearch.com is free with no signup (checked 2026-08-25). It’s anonymous by default, with no ad tracking, unlimited free searches, and chats that aren’t logged.
Sources: answers cite sources inline, closer to Perplexity’s format than most. The product is smaller, though: a thinner index, no Deep Research feature, no image generation, no file upload, and no named underlying models. Andi Plus is “coming soon.”
Paid, ad-free search: Kagi Assistant
Kagi Assistant comes bundled with Kagi’s paid search subscription (Ultimate at $25/mo, checked 2026-08-25, kagi.com/pricing) and routes across GPT-5.6, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.1 Pro, and Llama-based models. Kagi’s policy is no ads, no tracking, and no training on your chats. It fits if ads creeping into Perplexity are your complaint, or you want cited AI on top of a search engine you already trust.
Sources: citation quality matches Perplexity’s on most queries, because the index underneath is Kagi’s own. It’s paid-only with no free tier and no image generation, and the model depends on which vendor you pick per query.
When citations aren’t the job: Claude
Claude Pro at $17/mo annual or $20/mo monthly (checked 2026-08-25, anthropic.com/pricing) is the pick if your Perplexity use turned out to be reasoning and long-context work rather than search. Claude Opus 4.8 handles document analysis and coding past Perplexity’s ceiling.
Sources: none. The base product has no built-in web search, no citations, and no real-time reach. Individual plans train unless you opt out; Team and Enterprise opt out by default. See the verified Claude profile.
Why the rest miss the research brief
- DeepSeek. Free unlimited chat and a cheap API, but no citation-first product, no image generation, and data hosted in the People’s Republic of China. Covered in DeepSeek alternatives.
- Mistral Vibe. Strong on EU residency and MCP coding at $14.99/mo, but its web search lags Google-grounded rivals.
- Microsoft Copilot. Citations exist but are inconsistent, and it only makes sense inside M365.
- Poe. Citation quality swings from bot to bot, and each bot sets its own privacy terms.
- Lumo, Kimi, Meta AI. Lumo has no cited-search feature, Kimi has no training opt-out and keeps data in China, and Meta AI has no confirmed web search.
When to keep Perplexity anyway
If Perplexity’s citation-first UI is still how you fact-check answers and you only hit the free-tier wall now and then, keep it and add the one alternative that covers your gap. Mine is Gemini: Perplexity stays open next to it.
