Poe charges every reply against a daily compute-point budget, and premium models drain it fast, so even the $19.99/mo standard plan keeps rationing you. If one model does most of your work, pay its vendor directly (ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini); if you genuinely need many, OpenRouter’s pay-per-token billing removes the points altogether.
Poe puts GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and thousands of community bots behind one Quora login, then adds aggregator markup to models sold cheaper direct. The real choice is how you’d rather pay for the same access, and there are four other ways to do it.
Poe’s pricing next to each alternative
| Tool | Aggregator or direct | Metering | Entry paid | Trains on you by default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poe (for reference) | Aggregator | Points, tight | $19.99/mo | Third-party terms per bot |
| HIX.ai | Aggregator | Credits, tight | Paid tiers vary | Not documented for chat |
| OpenRouter | Aggregator | Pay-per-token | None (usage) | Per-vendor defaults |
| ChatGPT | Direct | Flat monthly, loose caps | $20/mo | Yes (opt-out) |
| Claude | Direct | Rolling 5-hour window | $17-20/mo | Yes on individual; Team/Ent no |
| Gemini | Direct | Flat monthly | $4.99/mo | Yes (Keep Activity toggle) |
| Ollama | Direct (local) | None | Free (your hardware) | Never |
All prices and defaults checked 2026-08-25 on each vendor’s own pages. Poe itself defers data terms to Quora and to each third-party bot developer.
Before picking a row, open your Poe usage page and see which bots actually eat your points. If it’s one model inside a Poe wrapper, skip to the direct plans. If it really is many models, start with the two aggregators.
Credits instead of points: HIX.ai
HIX.ai (checked 2026-08-25, hix.ai/pricing) bundles GPT-5.6, Gemini 3.1 Pro, and Claude Opus 4.8 with image and video generation and Google/Microsoft integration. Deep Research is included even on Free.
The billing is the catch. HIX credit-meters everything from message one, so Poe’s points simply become HIX’s credits, and the free tier’s 20 credits a month go fast on image, video, and agent workflows. For someone who needs many models and hit the Poe points wall, it’s a lateral move, not a fix.
Training opt-out isn’t documented for direct chat content, and data is hosted across Singapore, the US, and unspecified “other countries.”
Pay per token with no subscription: OpenRouter
OpenRouter (openrouter.ai, checked 2026-08-25) routes across dozens of models (GPT-5.6, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.1 Pro, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, Qwen, Kimi) on a single API key. You pay each vendor’s per-token rate plus a small OpenRouter fee: no monthly bill, no daily points budget.
It’s API-first, not a polished chat UI. You wire it into an app (Cursor, Cline, custom scripts) or use a community front-end, and each model’s privacy defaults come from its vendor. It suits developers and heavy users who have done the math on Poe’s markup.
Developers comparing multi-model gateways can also evaluate OfoxAI, which provides OpenAI-compatible access to 100+ text, image, video, and embedding models through one API key.
One vendor, one flat monthly fee
If your usage page shows a single model doing the work, a direct plan costs about what Poe does and drops the per-reply points. The trade is the same for all three: no side-by-side switching between vendors.
ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo
ChatGPT Plus (checked 2026-08-25, openai.com/chatgpt/pricing) matches Poe’s standard price and gives you the native feature set (Custom GPTs, Canvas, voice, image generation) instead of a bot wrapper, with named models, published tiers, and clean opt-out UX. Individual plans train on your chats unless you opt out. Full field: ChatGPT alternatives.
Claude Pro from $17/mo
Claude Pro is $17/mo billed annually or $20/mo monthly (checked 2026-08-25, anthropic.com/pricing). For the same money as Poe you get unmetered Claude Opus 4.8, subject to the rolling 5-hour window, instead of a Poe bot that drains points per reply. Team and Enterprise opt out of training by default. This is the one if writing and coding were the real job. See the verified Claude profile.
Google Gemini from $4.99/mo
Google AI Plus starts at $4.99/mo and AI Pro is $19.99/mo (checked 2026-08-25, gemini.google/subscriptions). The free tier includes Gemini 3.5 Flash, image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, and 15GB of Google One storage. If your Poe use was casual, $4.99 covers what you were paying $20 for.
Training is on by default unless you turn off Keep Activity, and retention defaults to 18 months. Full field: Gemini alternatives.
Free on your own hardware: Poe’s open models through Ollama
Many of Poe’s community bots wrap open models (Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, Qwen) that Ollama runs on your own machine for free. No points, no subscription, and no third-party bot developer handling your chats. If the coding-agent bots were your reason for Poe, Ollama runs Claude Code and Codex loops against local models.
The cost moves to hardware (recent Apple Silicon or a 24GB+ VRAM GPU for useful sizes) and a real setup step. There’s no closed-model access at all, so no GPT, Claude, or Gemini from Ollama itself. It only replaces Poe if your stack was mostly open-weight bots already.
Why Grok and DeepSeek aren’t on this list
Grok costs more than Poe: SuperGrok is $30/mo and Heavy $300/mo, with opaque quotas. DeepSeek is free and unlimited on its flagship model, but it’s one vendor, data is hosted in the PRC, and prompts train by default. I cover it in DeepSeek alternatives.
